Oh my my… October came so fast this year, where did the time go?! I must say I do love this time of the year. The cooling of fall into winter brings such a relief after the hot August nights. I love seeing the leaves change color and the smell of the winds. Happy Birthday to October babies! Interested in learning about your birthstone?
Similar to the leaves changing color, one of the birthstones for this month is the Opal. The name Opal is derived from the greek Opallos which means “to see a change (of color).” How fitting, isn’t it funny how things just fit sometimes! The greatest beauty of the opal is the contrast between the play of color between the milky background and the fiery specks (impurities). Very few gems have this effect, it also reminds me of fireworks, lightning, jellyfish and galaxies.
The Romans revered this gem as the most powerful of all because it has all the colors of the gems. Opal hues range across the spectrum, sometimes only one or two colors or the entire rainbow! Opals are classified based off of the background color (matrix, or body color) with some colors being more prized than others. The majority of people like the black background because the play-of-color stands out more. Regardless, the color strength of the impurities must be vivid to command a high rating and price. An interesting little fact here, Opals contain up to 20% water trapped in the silica structure.
The spectral delight given off by the Opal is what makes it the “Eye Stone.” The Opal acts as a prism within the aura, bringing the full spectrum of light into the system. It inspires love, hope, innocence, purity, luck and happiness, while allowing one to live and enjoy one’s earthly existence.

The second birthstone of October is Tourmaline. Oh yes, I know I have wrote quite a few times about this gemstone… but its just fabulous! You can read all about the different colors of Tourmaline here and where they are from… going to skip to the good stuff 🙂
While each color of Tourmaline has different metaphysical properties, in general Tourmaline aids in the understanding of oneself and others. It promotes self-confidence and diminishes fear. One of the most amazing things about this stone is that it balances the right-left sides of the brain which helps treat paranoia and overcomes dyslexia and improves hand-eye coordination.
Thats just amazing! Have a loved one born this month? Here is some of my product that feature Tourmaline as the center piece.
